UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
