The former Liverpool manager says coming back to coach Liverpool is theoretically possible.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that returning someday is a possibility. Klopp, following a hugely successful near-decade reign that included Champions League success and the Premier League crown in 30 years, has since taken on roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
The club claimed the Premier League last season, though countless followers who adore the manager would be thrilled by the notion that he may eventually return. Speaking candidly, he shared with the podcast host: “I said I won't manage any other side on English soil. Which implies if then it’s Liverpool...yeah. It's plausible.”
“I’m 58, which suggests I might decide later on, I don’t know. Do I have to make the decision today? In that case, I'd stay away. Luckily, I don’t have to do that. I'll wait and observe what the future brings.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about what circumstances would need to occur to tempt his return to the dugout, Klopp admitted he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “I don’t miss coaching; I don’t miss standing during downpours for two-and-a-half or three hours; No need for media briefings multiple times weekly or constant media duties each week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room as a dressing room, however, dining out alongside the squad enjoying conversation, that’s nice. We won a lot of games so there was often positive atmosphere around the place. I still have Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh ringing in my ears for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended for his successor, crediting him for the tweaks that took the title in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches across various tournaments post heavy investment, but he rubbished the notion that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words if you use the wrong words. A remarkable prospect. The French striker, incredible player. This is a well-built balanced team. You don’t have to worry about Liverpool, things will improve.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
The manager expressed deep feeling regarding the passing of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in in 2020, and its impact on Liverpool. The forward was killed in a car crash alongside his brother this past summer.
“Who can fill the void of a person like him? It goes beyond the player himself, it’s the guy he was. It's hard to picture the squad absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss on this topic. A profound tragedy for the entire squad also. No one within the club will ever use it for poor performances but it is the situation. Entering the changing area where he was omnipresent. Handling this on a personal level is challenging. Impossible.”
