The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Chronicling His 20 Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book this autumn called A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts the period served in jail.

The announcement was made less than two weeks following Sarkozy left prison while his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict related to criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to acquire presidential race money linked to the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he writes in one passage, implying the memoir is more about his thoughts during isolation rather than wider commentary of the strained and struggling jail system in France.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing at the prison, where one hears constant sound,” he adds. “The din unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is strengthened behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, he participated via screen from his cell, depicting prison life as draining. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this ordeal bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It affects one all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, who led the nation for a five-year term, set a precedent as ex-leader of an EU country and the first leader since WWII from France to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Cell Library

It remains unclear did he manage to go through the texts he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned later flees to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

The former leader remained in isolation to protect him in a room approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail located in the capital. Two bodyguards stayed in a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated that he had eaten just yogurt during his stay because he feared prison cuisine could have been tampered with. Options were available for self-catering but he turned this down, according to reports. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client each day throughout the jail term, told the release hearing security would be better released rather than in custody. “He received menacing messages, listened to yells after dark and emergency responses in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

His incarceration began on 21 October following a French court gave him five years in prison for criminal conspiracy related to a plan to secure campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial planned for the coming spring.
