British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
