Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
